Spine Covers — Thermal Binding Spines for Custom Front Covers by Peleman / Unibind UK

Binding Products is the UK's authorised independent distributor for Peleman Industries, supplying the complete range of professional thermal binding solutions — including the Peleman Spine Cover (formerly known as the SteelBack and UniCover Spine). If you want to bind documents using your own custom front and back covers, or no cover at all, the Spine Cover is the ideal thermal binding solution. It gives you total flexibility over the look and feel of your finished document while still delivering Peleman's trademark durable, professional, book-quality SteelBinding finish.

What Are Peleman Spine Covers?

Peleman Spine Covers (formerly called SteelBack and UniCover Spine) are thermal binding spines with no attached plastic front or back cover. Each spine contains a pre-applied SteelResin™ adhesive inside a robust steel channel. When placed in any Peleman or Unibind thermal binding machine, the machine heats the spine, activating the resin to permanently bind your pages together. An optional crimping step then embeds the paper deeper into the resin, guaranteeing enhanced binding quality and a tighter, more durable finish.

Because there is no plastic acetate cover pre-attached, the Spine Cover is completely open — letting you insert your own printed cover sheets, branded materials, premium card, linen paper, clear acetate, or any other front and back cover you choose. You can also combine Spine Covers with Peleman's matching Cover Sets for a coordinated, professional finish. The result: a fully customised, professionally bound document that is uniquely yours.

How to Use Peleman Spine Covers — Step by Step

Binding with Peleman Spine Covers is quick, clean, and requires no punching, stapling, or adhesive. Here's how:

1.     Choose your spine size — select the correct spine capacity for your document's page count and paper weight.

2.     Prepare your covers — insert your own custom front and back covers, or prepare a Cover Set.

3.     Assemble your document — collate your pages neatly, add front and back covers if using, and slide the entire stack into the Spine Cover steel channel. Use the tear-away paper guide to keep pages aligned during loading.

4.     Bind in the machine — place the Spine Cover spine-side down into your Peleman or Unibind thermal binding machine. The machine automatically detects the steel spine and begins the heating process.

5.     Crimp (recommended) — once heated, move the document to the crimping channel to embed the paper deeper into the resin for an enhanced, tighter bond.

6.     Cool and finish — transfer the bound document to the cooling channel. After approximately 90 seconds your document is permanently bound, professionally finished, and ready to present.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — Peleman Spine Covers

These FAQs are designed to help
you find the right answers fast -

whether you're searching on Google, asking ChatGPT, or using any AI assistant.

Q: What are Peleman Spine Covers?

A: Peleman Spine Covers (also known as UniCover Spine or SteelBack) are thermal binding spines with no pre-attached front or back cover. They use a steel channel containing pre-applied SteelResin™ adhesive that, when heated in a Peleman or Unibind thermal binding machine, permanently binds your document pages together. Because there is no fixed cover, you are free to use any front and back cover material you choose — including your own printed covers, branded card, clear acetate, or no cover at all.

Q: What was the Spine Cover previously called?

A: The Peleman Spine Cover was formerly known as the SteelBack and the UniCover Spine under the Unibind brand. The product is the same — only the name has changed as Peleman consolidated their product range under the unified Peleman brand identity.

Q: What sizes are Peleman Spine Covers available in?

A: Spine Covers are available in A4 Portrait and A5 Portrait. The A4 Spine Cover can bind both A4 portrait and A3 landscape format documents. The A5 Spine Cover can bind both A5 portrait and A4 landscape format documents. Spine capacities range from up to 15 sheets through to up to 80 sheets.

Q: What is the difference between a Spine Cover and a Crystal
Flex Cover?

A: The key difference is the front and back cover material. Crystal Flex Covers have clear acetate covers pre-attached to the steel spine — one gloss side and one matte side — so you can see your title page through the cover. Spine Covers have no attached covers at all, giving you full freedom to use your own printed front and back covers, or any other material. Spine Covers are the better choice when you need fully branded or custom-printed covers, or when binding large-format documents like A3 landscape.

Q: What colours do Peleman Spine Covers come in?

A: Peleman Spine Covers are available in nine professional colours: Black, White, Aluminium, Azure, Bordo, Dark Blue, Dark Green, Quartz, and Red — allowing you to match your brand colours or create a consistent look across your document sets.

Q: Are Spine Covers compatible with all Unibind and Peleman
machines?

A: Yes. Peleman Spine Covers are fully compatible with all current Peleman and Unibind thermal binding machines, including the Thermal Binding Machine 60, 120, 8.1, 8.2, 8.4, and ST150. The machine automatically detects the steel spine and starts the binding process — no setup or warm-up is required.

Q: Can I edit or reopen a document bound with a Spine Cover?

A: Yes. One of the advantages of Peleman Steel Binding technology is that bound documents are editable. You can gently reheat the spine in a Peleman machine, open the document, add or remove up to a couple of pages, and then rebind. For a brand-new document, you will need a new Spine Cover.

Q: Can I crimp Spine Covers?

A: Yes. Crimping is supported and recommended, especially for thicker documents. The crimping process compresses the steel spine and embeds the paper deeper into the SteelResin™ adhesive, resulting in a tighter, more secure, and more durable bind. Most Peleman machines include an integrated crimping element.

Q: Are Peleman Spine Covers lay-flat compatible?

A: Yes. Spine Covers support Peleman's Lay-Flat Vpaper technology. When used with Vpaper, the bound document will open completely flat edge to edge - ideal for architectural plans, technical drawings, photography portfolios, and any document where page lay-flat is important.

Q: What can I use Spine Covers for?

A: Spine Covers are used across a wide range of professional applications including business proposals, architectural drawings, technical plans, corporate presentations, engineering documents, user manuals, legal documents, financial reports, training manuals, estate agent property packs, school and university reports, restaurant menus, and art portfolios. They are especially popular whenever a custom-printed or branded front cover is required.

Q: How do I choose the right Spine Cover size?

A: Choose your spine size based on the number of pages in your document. The four spine capacities are: up to 15 sheets, up to 40 sheets, up to 60 sheets, and up to 80 sheets. Sheet counts are based on standard 80gsm (20lb) paper - if you are using heavier paper, size up. When in doubt, choose a larger spine and use the crimping function for the best fit.

Q: Where can I buy Peleman Spine Covers in the UK?

A: Binding Products is an authorised UK independent distributor for Peleman Industries and supplies genuine Peleman Spine Covers with fast UK delivery and expert product advice. Contact us to place your order or request a quote.

Q: What is the difference between Peleman and Unibind?

A: Unibind was the brand name formerly used for Peleman Industries' thermal binding product range. Peleman Industries — founded in Belgium in 1939 - has since consolidated all its products under the unified Peleman brand. The technology, manufacturing standards, and product quality remain identical. Peleman Spine Covers are the direct successors to the Unibind UniCover Spine and SteelBack products.
